Nelson Ray Woods, 69, of Blythewood, died Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Lexington Medical Center. Born on August 31, 1951 to the late Ivan Neal and Norma Lee Woods in Baltimore, Maryland, Nelson was educated at Savannah High School and Midlands Technical College.
Enlisting in the United States Army straight out of high school, Nelson served 21 years, including a tour in Vietnam, before retiring in 1991. After retiring from the Army, Nelson became an owner-operator for Schneider National.
Nelson attended both Windsor United Methodist Church and Columbia Korean United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school. In his free time, Nelson enjoyed fishing and spending time in the mountains.
Nelson is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Myong Woods; his sons, Neal Woods of Spartanburg, SC and John Woods (Catherine) of Columbia, SC; two grandchildren, Mitchell Woods and Foster Woods; and siblings Patricia Woods Kim (Tok Chin) of Irmo, SC, Barbara Woods Scott of Columbia, SC, George Woods of Columbia, SC, and Victoria Woods of Elgin, SC.
A private family graveside service, with military honors, will be held at Fort Jackson.
