He was born on April 3, 1952 in New York. Mitch was the son of the late Peter C and Marjorie L Hegquist. As the son of a Navy Corpsman, Mitch grew up in Levittown, NY and Camp LeJeune, NC. He was a life-long athlete, beginning with Little League in Levittown and Camp Lejeune, Track and Field at Division High School, and golf in Columbia. He graduated from The University of South Carolina in 1975 with a degree in Science and Mathematics. Mitch received his Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1980.
As a physician, he was instrumental in starting one of the first Occupational Medicine clinics in Columbia. He went on to establish his own practice, Carolina Occupational Healthcare, in 1988 and retired in 2018. After his wife, children, and grandchildren, one of his greatest loves was cooking. According to friends and family, his cooking ranked among the best. His constant search for new recipes and techniques was unceasing, and his family will always cherish the memories of the afternoons of cooking and experimentation that they shared together.
He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, John and Carl.
He will be sorely missed by his beloved wife, Isabelle Walden Hegquist; two daughters, Katherine Isabelle Hegquist Stevens (Parker) and Anna Elizabeth Hegquist Muthig (Chris); one son, Stephen Carl Hegquist; three grandchildren, Daniel Walden Stevens, John Parker Stevens, Matthew Hegquist Stevens; many nieces and nephews that he cherished and loved; and his many friends.
