Columbia, South Carolina – Mary Alice Lorick Sumner, 87, passed away on March 17, 2021 at Prisma Health Richland after a short illness. Mary Alice was the daughter of Mary B. Lorick and Albert J. Lorick. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John Sumner and daughter, Sandra S. McElveen and stepmother, Mattie B. Lorick.
Mary Alice grew up quickly after losing her mother at age eleven. With the loving support of her three aunts who lived in a house across the street, Mary Alice became a little homemaker for her daddy and a tremendous support for her two younger sisters.
Mary Alice was educated in the Columbia Schools and earned her degree from the University of South Carolina. After college, she was a stenographer for the S.C. Supreme Court where she met the love of her life, John. After their marriage, they lived in Charlotte, N. C., Chappaqua, NY where their three children were born, and the coast of S.C. She lost John while living at the beach and she and their children, Sandra, Scott, and Corey moved to Columbia where she made a home for them. She was employed as a secretary for Richland County Commission.
Mary Alice was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church. She was a sweet gentle spirit who deeply loved her family and her Lord Jesus. Her flowers brought her much pleasure and her cat, Mickey.
Mary Alice is survived by her son, Scott M. Sumner (Lisa); daughter, Corey S. Adkins (Bernie); grandchildren, Patrick and Cassidy McElveen, Jack and Dean Sumner, Ian Adkins; great-grandson, Everett; sisters, Susan L. Power and Betty Jo L. Dargan; nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 22, 2021 in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens, officiated by Dr. Mark Ross.
