Born on March 28, 1934, in Saluda, South Carolina, Mary was the epitome of grace, optimism, and kindness. She grew up in her beloved hometown, where she graduated from Saluda High School before embarking on a life full of dedication and love.
Mary married the late Purman Gunter, with whom she shared many cherished years before his passing in 1979. Together, they built a foundation of love and resilience, raising three devoted daughters: Ann Hill, Edie Fost, and Beti Mincey. Her legacy continues through her six grandchildren, Sarah Earley, Gant Hill, Tyler Fost, Morgan Fost, Ryan Mincey, and Devin Mincey, and two great-grandchildren Greyson Earley and Winter Earley, who brought her immense pride and joy.
She is survived by her brother George Bartley and predeceased by her brother Bill, sisters Carrie Lou, Royce, and Marian as well as many loving extended family members.
Mary devoted her professional life to serving others. She retired after 14 years at AgFirst Farm Credit Bank and continued her career with Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia, South Carolina where she retired after 25 years. Mary’s natural warmth, understanding demeanor, and sympathetic nature made her the perfect person to comfort bereaved families during their most challenging times. She brought compassion, dignity, and a sense of peace to her work, impacting countless lives.
She was active at First Baptist Church of Columbia where she was a member of the Joy of Living Sunday School class. Mary’s radiant smile was a beacon of encouragement. Her optimistic outlook on life and steadfast faith inspired everyone she encountered. She was a devoted mother, a cherished grandmother, and a steadfast friend to all.
At Mary’s request, a graveside service will be held on November 30 at 2:00 PM at West Side Baptist Cemetery on Delree Street in West Columbia, SC.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice in Mary’s honor, continuing her legacy of kindness and compassion.
Mary will be deeply missed but fondly remembered, as her love and light remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
