Mary Carolyn Jordan Phifer joined her late husband, Moulton Avery Phifer, III, in Heaven on July 16, 2022. She was born July 21, 1929, in Ridge Spring, SC, the daughter of Clyde R. Jordan and Susan Hinnant Jordan. She graduated from Ridge High School in 1946, a member of the Beta Club, Editor of the newspaper, and Valedictorian. She graduated from Winthrop College in 1950, where she was House President and a member of the Senate, She received the Sylvan Award at graduation for being Magna Cum Laude as best in extra-curricular activities. She came to Columbia to begin work on her Masters and to teach first grade in District 1, which she did for 30 years. She received a scholarship, as outstanding reading teacher, for twelve graduate hours in the Reading Clinic at U.S.C. She was also a member of Alpha Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, for many years. Her family was very proud of her for being named Outstanding Teacher of the Year several times at Burnside Elementary School.
She married Moulton Avery Phifer, III, in 1952 and they made their home in Columbia. They attended St. Martin's in the Field Episcopal Church where she taught Sunday School and was a Cub Scout Leader. They helped build St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church where she also taught Sunday School briefly, worked with Church projects and helped chair the Book Sales. Carolyn also did volunteer work in both Columbia and Beaufort.
Beginning in 1988, Carolyn and Moulton spent summer months each year in their home at Lands End, and had many friends there where they enjoyed shrimping, crabbing, fishing and entertaining the Grands!
Carolyn was predeceased by her oldest son, Moulton Avery Phifer, IV, married to Kathy Phifer. She leaves behind a daughter, Sara P. Burnside (Robert), and a son, John H. Phifer (Sarah). She had five grandchildren: William Phifer (Jen), Kerri Vitug (Matt), Sara Adkins (Tom), Matthew Phifer (Katie) and Christopher Phifer (Lauren). She was blessed with thirteen great grandchildren: Liam and Fin Phifer, Ava, Ryan, Audrey and Rhett Vitug, Lily, Ella, Caroline, Margaret and Lucas Adkins, Riley and George Phifer.
She is also survived by her older sister, Betty Ann Cone, married to the late Dallas S. Cone in Ridge Spring, and many loving nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Delores Weaver for her many years as Mom's friend, spiritual leader and nurse, and the many wonderful caretakers Mom had prior to entering NHC. Thank you Ruth, Shay, Gerri, Niki and Joe for your compassion to Mom.
Memorials may be made to St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church, with burial in the churchyard. Family will receive friends following the service at the Church, as there will be no visitation.
