Mary Martha was born on June 12, 1946 in Chattanooga, TN, the daughter of the late Olive Josephine Davis Griggs and the late Erick E. Griggs, Sr.
Mary Martha attended Missionary Ridge Elementary School. She received her B.A. degree in American Literature from the University of Chattanooga, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She began her career as a news reporter for The Chattanooga News-Free Press, now the Chattanooga Times Free Press, and later served as the publications editor at Provident Life & Accident Insurance Company and the director of public relations at The McCallie School in Chattanooga. In Atlanta, GA, she worked for the Alpha Delta Pi Foundation at the sorority Executive Office. The career she most enjoyed was serving as the House Mother for the Kappa Alpha Order at the University of South Carolina from 2006 until 2013.
While living in Chattanooga, she was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church. In Columbia, she was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha Josephine Campbell “Margie” Blackwelder; son-in-law, Brian Blackwelder; grandchildren, James Brian Blackwelder Jr., John Campbell Blackwelder, and Mary Margaret “Molly” Blackwelder, all of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, Erick E. Griggs, II and Bitse Griggs; niece, Missy and her family, all of Ringgold, GA; beloved friends, Suzanne Haynes of Trenton, GA, and Karen Lasseter of Lookout Mountain, GA.
The family will hold a private memorial service.
