John Hampton Campbell was born in Whitmire, SC on January 29, 1951 to William Boyd Campbell and Sara Frances White. He grew up in Seneca and Spartanburg, SC. He graduated from Dorman High School in 1969. Following high school, he enrolled in the US Air Force and served from 1969-1973. He was stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan and Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, MT. It was while stationed in Montana that he met his wife of 50 years, Joan Frances Lear. After the Air Force, he graduated with a degree in Accounting from the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg. He worked as an accountant for the University of South Carolina for 36 years across the Spartanburg, Beaufort, and Columbia campuses, ultimately becoming the Controller for the University of South Carolina. While working for USC, he was active in the Administrative Employees Club and was awarded “Administrative Employee of the Year Award” in 2000.
John served many years as a coach, umpire/referee, and league leader at Caughman Road Park in Columbia, SC. He could also frequently be found at sporting events at St. Joseph’s and Cardinal Newman schools. He has been an active member of St. Joseph’s Church and an active citizen and neighbor in the Lower Richland/Hopkins community in Columbia, SC.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Lear Campbell; children: Jay Campbell (Eveline), Sam Campbell (Charlotte), and Emily Ragland (Mike); grandchildren: Connor Barry Campbell and Oliver Quinn Campbell; and brothers: William Boyd Campbell, Jr and Joel White Campbell.
His family would like to thank the teams at Lexington Medical Center, UNC Oncology, Midlands Regional Rehab, MSA Hospice, and South Carolina Oncology Associates for the excellent care they provided. They would also like to thank the many neighbors, friends, and family who have provided support.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 14, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. A private burial will be held at Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry, SC.
