COLUMBIA - “I waited patiently for the Lord and He inclined to me and heard my cry” Psalms 40:1 “And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” Psalms 23:6 Joel Archer Cannon passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. He was born June 6, 1930 and was the son of Thomas Millard Cannon and Molise Martin and stepson of Thelma Ward Cannon. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Ann Cannon; four children, Joel A. Cannon, Jr., (Susan) of Knoxville, TN, Charles Millard Cannon of Columbia, Tricia Thornton (Billy) of Columbia, Dee Buros (Dennis) of Elko, MN; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Joe grew up in Conway, S.C. until he attended Spartanburg Methodist College. There after he enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent three years serving his country, eighteen months in Korea. Joe returned home and married Mary Ann Thompson of Conway, S.C. They moved to Orangeburg, S.C. for Joe take a position with General Motors Corp. He later became part owner of Edisto Asphalt Co. and then owned and operated JH Slaughter Oil Co. He was part owner of Carolina Oil Co. until he retired. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Orangeburg, a member of the Howard Dixson Sunday School Class, was President of the Orangeburg Church Society, and served as both a Deacon and Elder. Joe was also a member of the VFW and American Legion in Orangeburg. One of his lifelong loves was sports. He received a scholarship to Spartanburg Methodist College, and lettered in football, basketball and baseball in high school. He participated and won trophies in the Golden Gloves Boxing competition and boxed in the U.S. Army. Joe was a member of the S.C. Senior Olympic Games and won gold and silver medals. He represented his state in The National Games playing both tennis and racquetball 1991-1997. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone at NHC Parklane for the special care given to Joe and Mary Ann, especially Carolyn Thompson for the love and devotion she showed Joe. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2014, in Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the church or a charity of one’s choice.
