celebration and thanksgiving for his life will be held at 11:00am on Monday, April 7, 2014,
at First Baptist Church, Boyce Chapel, Columbia, SC, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Emmett Lee, IV, and
Richard Craig Webb officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service in Ellis
Hall. A private burial will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC at a later date.
The son of the late James Elvidge Webb and the late Ada Mae Lee Webb, Roger was born in
Langdale, AL. He was a 1958 graduate of the University of Alabama where he was a member of Pi Kappa
Phi Fraternity. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and he retired from
State Farm Insurance Company with 35 years of service. He was an active member of First Baptist
Church, Columbia, SC for 50 years where he was an ordained deacon, taught Sunday School for 15
years, served on many church committees, and was a member of the Joy of Living Sunday School Class.
Roger was a man of integrity and was highly respected by everyone who knew him. He was
caring, patient, and generous, and always there to lend a helping hand. His diligence, leadership skills and
business sense were impressive. He was a loyal and humble man who loved his Lord, living for Jesus
first, others second and himself last. Roger was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved
spending his free time with family and would do anything for his grandchildren. He enjoyed sports and
playing golf with friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, wisdom, and quick wit.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Margaret Garges Webb; son Richard Craig Webb
(Clair) of Charleston, SC (currently in seminary in Toronto, Canada); daughter Melanie Webb Lee
(Bobby) of Richmond, VA; daughter Tracy Webb Oliver (Pete), of Columbia, SC; five grandchildren:
Hampton and Gillian Webb, Olivia and Emma Shuster, and Isabella Lee; and step-grandsons Blake and
Rhett Oliver. He is also survived by his brother, Darryl Lee Webb (Connie ) of Tuscaloosa, AL; brother,
Lamar Webb of Valley, AL; sister, Betty McDaniel of Columbus, GA, and nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his sister Christine Horton.
The family expresses gratitude to the Joy of Living Sunday School Class for their many acts of
kindness during his illness; also, to Dr. Robert Schulze and his staff of Columbia Heart; to the nursing staff at
Palmetto Richland Heart Hospital; and to Palmetto Health Hospice staff.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Highland Baptist Church, 9200 New Ashcake
Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116 (where his son-in-law Bobby Lee is pastor), or to the seminarian fund at
St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 142 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401 (in support of his son Richard
Webb in seminary), or to First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 1000, Columbia, SC 29202.
