ELGIN - James “Jimmy” Smith Legg III, 41, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021, at Prisma Richland Hospital after a courageous three-week-long battle following an automobile accident. Jimmy was born April 29, 1980, in Webster, TX, to James Smith Legg Jr. and the late Barbara Hollins Legg.
Jimmy, an avid Gamecocks fan, spent his professional career working on IT systems, most recently at Blue Cross and Blue Shield. He gained his love and knowledge of computers from watching his father’s career at NASA. Jimmy was interested in learning how to fly, and he had a fondness for motorcycles, shooting guns and debating politics. He loved rock music and playing the guitar, and he was happiest when making others laugh, especially his daughters. His final gift to the world was saving three lives through organ donation.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his father; his three daughters, Kymber Hollins Legg (Geri and Rhett) of Florence, Ella Elizabeth Legg and Amelia Anne Legg of Columbia (Jenell); loving sister and caretaker to the end, Michelle Delores Johnson (Tim) of Andrews; niece/more like annoying little sister, Cynthia Nicole Johnson (Brian) of Washington, DC; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Florida; and many close friends.
Family will receive friends at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, on Saturday, July 10, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 3926 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Democratic National Committee at secure.actblue.com or the National Rifle Association at donate.nra.org which were two of Jimmy’s closely held passions. Lastly, a special thanks to the nurses and staff of Prisma Richland Hospital and We Are Sharing Hope SC in Columbia for taking such great care of Jimmy during his fight.
