Born in Kingsport, Tenn., he was a son of the late James Ernest Hardwicke Jr. and Annette Aigner Hardwicke. He was a research chemist for 38 years at Hardwicke Chemical Company and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He graduated from Dreher High School and from teenhood was a talented artist, selling some of his artwork to his teachers. That talent translated into a passion for landscaping and gardening. Along with his passion for chemistry, he loved to cook and create new recipes and sauces. A fitness and health enthusiast, he was a superb fisherman and outdoorsman. He taught and passed along his love of fishing to his son and nephew and was an avid collector of antiques. He was a self-made and successful research chemist who accomplished numerous patents on chemical processes, as well as a fishing lure called “Mr. Macho.” However, nearest to his heart were family gatherings at Pawley’s Island and Lake Murray. Surviving are his wife, Christina Elizabeth Clark Hardwicke; children, David Robert Hardwicke, Sheila Hardwicke Moore (Thomas), all of Columbia; three grandchildren, Morgan, Sullivan, Emory; brother, Chris Hardwicke of Columbia; sisters, Susan Hardwicke of Texas, Mary Ann Hardwicke (Mark Cohen) of Pa.; nephew, Michael Hardwicke Cohen; and his dog, Ginger. He was predeceased by a son, James Ernest Hardwicke IV and brothers, David and Robert Hardwicke.
