COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Iris Sellers Payne, 92, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 18, 2017 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Payne passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at her home in Columbia. She was born in Eutaw, Alabama on December 14, 1924 to the late Letha and William T. Sellers. Mrs. Payne was the most caring mother, grandmother and person that anyone would be proud to call “Mama,” “Mama Payne” or Iris. She loved her girls deeply and just wanted them to be happy. She was the smartest woman and achieved a successful career. She had the quickest wit and could come up with some of the funniest statements without even trying. She will be truly missed by her family. Iris was employed with Civil Service for 39 years and was the Budget Analyst for Moncrief Army Hospital for many of those years. After two years enjoying retirement, she decided to return to work part-time at the School of Nursing at USC. She permanently retired at the age of 70. She is survived by her daughters, Linda and husband Ron Windham, Barbara Calcutt, and Pat and her husband Doc Askins; her grandsons, PJ Calcutt and his wife Jamie, and Ken Calcutt and his wife Missey; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Iris was preceded in death by her husband, Dillard Blackburn Payne, Jr.; her two sons-in-law, James “PeeWee” Calcutt and Frankie Griner; four sisters; and two brothers. The family would like to extend a special thank you to her longtime caregivers, Donna Dreher and Laurie Tanner, as well as part-time caregiver, Karen Dreher.
