COLUMBIA - Harvey Addison Allen, Senior, Ph.D., 86, died on Saturday, June 22, 2024. He was born in High Point, NC on August 31, 1937, the son of Samuel Nolan Allen and Alta Parks Allen. He grew up in High Point, NC, graduated from High Point High School in 1955, and then enrolled at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he would earn his Bachelor's degree in 1960. Upon graduation, he worked as a teacher in the Asheboro, NC school system, and then as principal at Fayetteville Street School. He returned to UNC-Chapel Hill to earn his Master's degree in 1964 and doctoral degree in 1970.
Harvey married his wife, Judy Maness, on August 14, 1965. In August 1969, they moved to Columbia, SC, where Harvey had accepted a faculty position in the College of Education at the University of South Carolina. In December 1969, Harvey became a proud father with the birth of his son, Harvey Addison Allen, Jr. (Andy) and again in February 1974, when his son James Cory Allen was born.
Harvey worked at the College of Education at USC for over 30 years, as a professor and later as an Associate Dean and Interim Dean. He was proud to have advised dozens of doctoral candidates over his career at the college. He retired as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 2005 and was honored with the endowing of The Harvey A. Allen Scholarship, which is awarded to students pursuing their teacher certification in Elementary Education.
Harvey, Judy and their sons worshiped at Shandon United Methodist Church. For 50 years, Harvey taught the JOY Class, a large and active Sunday School class with a membership of well over one hundred adults. As Sunday School teacher, Harvey enjoyed sharing his love of Christ, his sense of humor, and his opinions on the Gamecocks and Tigers and his beloved UNC Tarheels. While he was teaching adults, Judy taught the 4-year old kindergarten class for over 40 years. The JOY Class honored their commitment to teaching by establishing The Allen Fund in hopes of continuing the educational efforts of Dr. and Mrs. Allen at Shandon.
Harvey joined the Cayce-West Columbia Rotary Club in 1997. He served as club president from July 1, 2003 - June 30, 2004. He and Judy attended 11 International Conventions and in doing so toured the host countries. He recently reached Level 3, Major Donor Recognition in giving to The Rotary Foundation.
Harvey’s family grew when his son, Cory, married Jane Appleyard of Melrose, Massachusetts in 2002. In 2004, he became “Tapa” to his granddaughter, Emily, and in 2006 to his grandson, Max. Harvey had boundless love for his family as they did for him.
