George Andrew McIntosh

COLUMBIA - Col. George A. McIntosh (U.S. Army Ret.), age 95, a resident of Still Hopes Retirement Community, passed away on March 23rd. He was born on May 30, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents were Eleanor H. and Floyd N. McIntosh. He grew up in Cleveland and graduated from Glenville H.S. in 1939. He attended Ohio University and early in 1942 was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was sent to New Guinea and ended up in the Philippines as a 1st Sergeant. He received a commission as a 2nd Lt. of field artillery and commanded two separate artillery battalions and the 416th Engineer Group. He was sent to Korea in 1951 serving as a forward observer and later served as a prison camp Enclosure Commander. He was sent back to Cleveland State University to get his B.S. degree in electrical engineering. He attended the Command and General Staff College and transferred to the Corp of Engineers and retired as a Colonel. Following his military career, George went to work for The Square D company in Cleveland and transferred to Columbia when the plant opened here. In his career at Square D he organized a service division to provide all levels of service for the products made in 58 national and international plants. He was a member of the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers and the American National Safety Institute, the Association of United States Army Military Officers Association, The Robert Burns Society of S. C. He was a docent at the S.C. State Museum and a member of that board. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community. George served Shandon United Methodist Church in so many capacities they could not all be listed. He served as chair of the Board of Trustees, finance chair, Property Committee Chair, Head of the Ushering Committee and many more. He opened the doors of the church and served with great dedication and leadership. George was predeceased by his beloved wife Patsy, who also served Shandon United Methodist Church with dedication as a choir member and many other capacities. The church library is named for Patsy. He was also predeceased by brothers, Floyd and Donald McIntosh. He is survived by a nephew, Doug McIntosh, and cousins, Stuart and Janet McIntosh. The family wishes to thank Barbara Cobb, a friend who provided such dedicated care for George over the years. A memorial service will be held at Shandon United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday March 26, 2017 with a reception after the service in Player Dining Hall.
