COLUMBIA - George William Jefferson, 81, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012 at his home. He was born in Charleston, SC to George and Margaret Lamb Jefferson. He attended Charleston Catholic schools, graduating from Bishop England High School. He received a Bachelor's degree from the College of Charleston and taught history at James Island High School. He then worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Walterboro, SC and in Washington, DC. During this time he attended the Catholic University School of Law, receiving his degree in 1969. He practiced law in Columbia, SC before becoming a magistrate and then a Master-in-Equity Judge in Lexington, SC. In retirement, Judge Jefferson wrote publications for the SC Bar and served on several SC Bar committees. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and friend. He enjoyed coaching youth sports teams and was an avid Gamecock fan. He was a devoted Catholic and a faithful member of Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Vivian Manning Jefferson and his four children, Paul Jefferson (Annie), Claire Taylor (Doug), Mark Jefferson (Kim) and Christian Jefferson (Seana) and several nieces, a nephew, grand nieces and nephews. He was a doting grandfather to Hannah, Rianna, Meagan, Katherine, Summer, Reid, Emma, Grace and Sarah. He was pre-deceased by his parents; his sisters, Mary Drescher, Dolly Patterson, Mildred Williams, Georgette Jefferson and his brother, Robert Jefferson.
The family will received friends Monday, August 27, 2012 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A mass will be held on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Columbia at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private. Memorials can be made to the Cancer Treatment Center of America or the Family Life Center at OLH Catholic Church.
