It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of George Hamilton Hill III, a beloved family man, a respected man of knowledge and wisdom. He passed away on November 19, 2024, of a cardiac arrest at the age of 78 surrounded by loved ones. He believed in the plan of eternal salvation, so he will be greeted by his mother and father, Francis Tilghman Hill, and George Hamilton Hill Jr., his son Zachary Tilghman Hill, and his brother Bruce Hill.
In high school, George was known for his athletic prowess in track and field. Upon graduating, he answered a call to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Canada. He graduated from Brigham Young University.
George was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He bestowed generous gifts and spoiled them as much as he possibly could. George wasn’t just a pillar of his family, but also known for his storytelling. He also gave sage advice and guided many. Being a contributing member of the community was a passion for George. He especially enjoyed the South Carolina Ballet and the Columbia Museum of Art. He enjoyed fine dining and treating his friends, family, and missionaries. The other great passions of his were politics and history.
He was a lifelong active member of his church, where he was both an Elder and a High Priest. He enjoyed participating and teaching. He was a regular attendee of the Temple in Columbia.
George's legacy is one of faith, integrity, service, and love for family. He is survived by his lovely wife, Joyce Martin Hill, and his children, Joshua James Hill, George Hamilton Hill IV, Shannon Fay Thorpe, and Thaddeus Clarkson Hill. And his brother David Hill, and sisters Janice Basham and Roxanne Hill.
A celebration of life will be held at the Latter-day Saint Chapel, 1391 Centerville Road, Ridgeway, SC 29130, Saturday, November 23rd. Viewing from 2 pm to 3 pm, with the Service at 3 pm. Interment will be a private affair.
Memorials may be made to Hoof and Paw Benevolent Society, Wounded Warriors Project, and the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
