Flo was born November 14, 1925 in Columbia to James Wade and Georgie Lever Tarrer. She attended Logan Elementary, Wardlaw Junior High, and graduated from Columbia High School. In November 1943, she married James Benjamin Hornsby. Flo was employed as an executive secretary at Dick and Merle Smith, Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company and the South Carolina State Housing Authority. Always active in her churches, she taught Sunday School and Bible School at College Place UMC and served as Treasurer of the Agnes Rogers Circle at Lexington UMC for many years. She was a true southern lady filled with grace and charm. Flo loved fashion and it showed as she always wore matching outfits with coordinating jewelry, shoes and accessories including her canes in her later years. She was an excellent hostess, always offering to host baby and bridal showers in her home. Flo travelled extensively including Mexico, Hawaii, Canada, and the Bahamas. Her favorite place of all was the beach, especially her family’s annual beach trip to the South Carolina coast. She will be remembered for the light that she brought to any room she entered. We will carry her sweet smile in our hearts forever.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, James Benjamin Hornsby, who passed away in 1987, two brothers; Wade Tarrer, Jr. (Mary) and Edward T. Tarrer. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, James B. Hornsby, Jr. (Marsha), Julie Anne Hornsby; four grandchildren, Kimberly Andreae (Eric), Jason Hornsby (Amanda), Brian Hornsby (Bianca), Jake Melnyk (Michael); five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth Carter.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Charlotte Region Hospice, Cadence Living Huntersville, and all who have supported them with well wishes and prayers.
