COLUMBIA Graveside service for Dr. Emmanuel Farber, 95, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2014, in Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Dr. Farber died Sunday, August 3, 2014. Born in Toronto, Canada, he was a son of the late Morris and Mary Madorsky Farber. He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1942, and in 1949, he received a Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley in Biochemistry. He served during World War II as a medical officer in the Canadian Army. As a prominent research scientist of pathology and biochemistry, he received numerous academic honors and recognitions, including the Parke-Davis Award, Rous-Whipple Award and Eastman Kodak Award. In addition, he served as president of the American Association for Cancer Research and of the American Society of Experimental Pathology. He also was a member of the Surgeon General’s Committee on Smoking and Health in 1964 where he helped to establish the link between smoking and cancer. A strong and devoted supporter of the Jewish community and Israel, he was a member of Tree of Life Synagogue. He was a generous philanthropist. He supported many local activities such as the Jewish Community Center and USC Symphony, as well as a worldwide range of nonprofit organizations. Surviving are his daughter, Naomi Farber and her husband, Steven Grosby of Columbia; grandson, Samuel Grosby of Rochester, N.Y.; and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Farber; second wife, Henrietta Keller Farber; brother, Lionel Farber; and sister, Sophie Goldblatt.
