COLUMBIA - Dr. William P. Smith Jr. (Billy) passed peacefully at home in Columbia at the age of 89. Billy grew up in Cheraw, SC, and graduated the University of SC. For five years, he enjoyed being a commercial artist and photographer with WBT-WBTV in Charlotte, NC.
In 1960, Billy enrolled in the University of SC Pre-Dental curriculum. He attended the Medical College of VA School of Dentistry in 1962, graduating with a DSS in l966.
Dr. Smith practiced dentistry for 46 years, and in addition to his regular patients, he provided care for indigent patients at the Richland County Family Service Center one day a week for 22 years. Billy also held the position of forensic dentist for the Richland County Coroner's Office for 20 years.
A most loyal Gamecock, in 1975 Billy designed the USC block C logo and a football helmet at the request of then Coach Jim Carlin. He was honored that his block C design remains the official USC football logo to this day. In 1983, Coach Joe Morrison asked Billy to design the Gamecock home and away ("Fire Ant") uniforms - winning fan favorites. During this era and for two decades, Billy also served as the USC football team dentist.
Dr. Smith was multi-talented: A photographer, fine artist, superb dentist and recognized at Williams Brice Stadium as a Legendary Fan during the 2011 season and made an Honorary Member of the USC Association of Lettermen.
A devoted father and husband, Billy's quick wit made people laugh and feel welcome, In his final years and for 10 years, he served as a Review Analyst for a prominent company — working alongside some of Billy's most treasured friends. His dry humor and funny stories endeared him to many. Billy is greatly missed by his loving wife, Janet; his beloved daughter, Eleanor Smith, and son, John Smith; brothers James (Becky) and Bobby (Cynthia); niece, Ann Mishoe.
A Trinity Episcopal Church minister will lead the family in a private memorial service at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors and/or charity of choice.
