COLUMBIA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy Farrell Ragsdale, 106, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 17, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with final prayers and commendations immediately following at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Ragsdale died Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1909, she was the daughter of the late Maurice Lewis and Mary Coleman Farrell.
Mrs. Ragsdale attended Columbia College and studied art under Mrs. Marcellus Whaley of Columbia. She later attended Peace College and the Ferree School of Art in Raleigh, N.C. A talented artist, she did pastel portraits of many Columbia children. She was a long-standing member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Forest Lake Club, and Literary and Garden Clubs.
Mrs. Ragsdale was devoted to her close family and wonderful, diverse group of friends. She possessed a sharp wit, a passion for learning, and deep generosity.
Surviving are her sister, Margaret Farrell Twomey of Columbia; her daughter-in-law, Sheila MacConochie Ragsdale of Atlanta, G.A.; grandchildren, Mary Coleman Ragsdale (Karen Popp), John William Ragsdale, III (Luna) of Chapel Hill, NC, and Margaret Ragsdale Ancona (Rocco) of San Jose, CA; seven great-grandchildren, Cole, William, Ben, Eden, Isabelle, Sam and Avery; nephew, Marc Lewis Thielman (Lea Ann) of Eden Prairie, MN; nieces, Jean Elaine Farrell, Frances Herman Jackson, and Margaret McFarland Jackson (John); great niece, Katherine Jackson Anderson and great nephew, George Reider (Mitzie) of Columbia; and great niece, Caroline Jackson Ward (Dan) of Atlanta, GA. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, John William Ragsdale, Sr.; her son, John William Ragsdale, Jr., and seven brothers and sisters.
