SNELLVILLE GA. - A funeral service for David Carroll Garris, 70, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2016, at the funeral home. Mr. Garris died Sunday, December 11, 2016. Born June 2, 1946, in Columbia, he was a son of the late Roy Ellison Garris Sr. and Hattie Louise Holladay Garris. Carroll graduated from Dentsville High School, Class of 1964, where he played trumpet in the high school marching band. He also graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1968 with a B.S. in Business Administration with a major in Banking, Finance and Insurance. He was a member of and coach of the University of South Carolina swim team, where he set records in backstroke. Very athletic and adventurous, he had a love for all aquatic activities. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1969-1971 in Charleston. Following his service in the U.S. Navy, he operated the family insurance business, Garris Insurance Agency for more than 40 years. He was best known for being dedicated and hardworking with a genuine love for people and helping others. Most importantly, his life exemplified great, pure love for the Lord and his family. Upon retirement, he and his wife resided in Snellville, Ga. where he was an active member in the Senior Adult Ministry at First Baptist Church of Snellville, Ga. Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Cheryl Clayton Garris; daughters, Amber Garris McDonald (Shawn), Amy Garris Goodman (Patrick); brothers, Roy E. Garris, Jr. of Pendleton, S.C., W. Ralph Garris (Jeanne); granddaughters, Holley McDonald, Natalie McDonald, Julianne Goodman, Isabella Goodman; and a grandson, P. Davis Goodman Jr. He was predeceased by his brothers, infant Donnie Ray Garris and Gene Allen Garris Sr. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
