Born August 19, 1932 in New York City, New York, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Monica Olsen.
She lived in the New York area as a child and raised her family in Tewksbury Township, New Jersey. Barbara retired to Florida, and finally to Charleston then Columbia, SC. She received her BS in Chemistry from the College of St. Elizabeth, her Master and Doctor of Education from Rutgers University. She taught from elementary to university levels, was the director of an alternative school, which was part of North Hunterdon Regional High School. She retired after working as a business and educational consultant for Round Valley Computer Co. She served as President of the Board of Education in Tewksbury, the American Association of University Women in Hunterdon County and the Alternative Education Assoc. of New Jersey. She volunteered for the Art Goes to School program in NJ, the Guardian Ad Litem Program in Lake County FL, and the Begin with Books Program in Charleston County, SC. She was a member of Christ the King parish in Mt. Pleasant before moving to Columbia in July 2018.
In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her brothers Paul and Peter Olsen.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Robert Edward Rivell and her children Beverly Rivell (husband Gene Van Benthyssen), Dr. William Rivell (wife Dr. Maria Amadoz Rivell), Elizabeth Salasko (William Salasko), Susan McClam (Robert McClam), John Rivell (Doreen Rivell), Robert Rivell (Lydia Parras), Dr. James Rivell (Dr. Maria Luisa Rivell) along with 22 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting family.
