Scott was born on April 26, 1988, in Columbia MO, the son of Jeff and Marla Thelen. He attended Columbia Public Schools and graduated from Hickman High School in 2006. Scott attended the University of Missouri and in 2010, graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. In 2012, Scott obtained a Master of Business Administration degree in the Crosby MBA program from the Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business, and received the award for top MBA Finance student of his graduating class.
Scott was the team leader for a group of graduate finance students from the University of Missouri Trulaske College of Business team that won the CFA Institute Research Challenge in St. Louis. That win qualified the MU team to advance to the Americas Regional Challenge in New York to compete against other universities from the United States, Canada and South America.
Scott previously worked at Edward Jones in St. Louis and was recently working towards a PhD. in finance at the University of Iowa. Scott loved fishing and sports, especially Missouri Tiger basketball. He also loved the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan and enjoyed salmon fishing excursions on the big lake with his family and friends. Scott enjoyed reading and was always quick to offer investment advice. He enjoyed regular group chats with childhood friends he dearly cared about and loved.
Scott is survived by his parents, Jeff and Marla Thelen, brother Ben (and wife Becky), grandfather Harley Wright, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Mark and Shirley Thelen and his grandmother Clara Wright.
A Memorial Contribution may be made to the Scott Winans Thelen Memorial Scholarship fund. Scott’s family worked with University of Missouri officials to establish this fund to provide scholarship awards to students in the Crosby MBA program at the Robert J.
