R. L. was born in Columbia on June 10, 1943 the son of Richard Leroy Owen, Sr. and Hattie Carlene Pemberton Owen. He graduated from Hallsville High School, class of 1961. On June 3, 1973 he was united in marriage to Barbara Jane Smith Owen, who survives.
R. L. was a master craftsman and artisan. He made a career of building, remodeling and restoring homes throughout Boone County and took great pride in helping his clients’ dreams become reality. R. L.’s creativity continued through photography, silver smithing, wire sculpted jewelry, as well as leather tooling and wood carving. He was known as “Clausman” by many people because of the countless Santa Claus figures he carved that Barb painted and finished. R. L. was known to always have a fishing pole in his work truck and after a long day, he would stop at his grandfather’s lake and “wet a line.” R.L. was a kind, compassionate man who had a soft spot for all animals, especially his dogs. He was a devoted husband and loving father who provided well for his family. He will always be remembered for his big heart and endless adoration of his grandchildren.
R. L. is survived by his wife, Barb; their son, Richard Evans Owen (and fiancée- Ysobel Ignacio) of Los Angeles; his siblings, Olga Owen, Denny Owen, Ola Palmer, and Quita Hubble; his grandchildren, Travis Millam (Nicci Palmer), Eric Millam (Amber Rice), and Kristi (Tyler) Holland; six great grandchildren; as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters, LaTisha Gail Owen and Tonia Renee Owen.
R.L. will be greatly missed and deeply appreciated for the skills, knowledge, love, and inspiration he provided clients, friends, and especially his family.
