Mrs. Joy Again Hickam

Joy LaVerne (Again) Hickam, 91, of Columbia passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at Boone Hospital. Services will be Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Memorial Funeral Home at 2 PM with visitation 1-2 PM. Burial will be private in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Joy was born in Columbia, Missouri on July 18, 1931 the daughter of Allen McPherson Again and Sarah Frances (Keene) Again. She graduated from Hickman High School in 1949. On August 6, 1949 she was united in marriage to Godfrey L. “Kirkie” Hickam who preceded her in death on November 22, 2012.

Joy worked alongside her husband in the family business, Hickam Construction, where she did design of homes, managed rentals and was the bookkeeper. She was employed for over twelve years with the Sheep Breeder Magazine here in Columbia. She worked for a time with the Missouri Association of Junior Colleges. She was baptized at Little Bonne Femme Baptist Church and was later a long-time member of Parkade Baptist Church. She enjoyed decorating her home, gardening, playing bingo and fishing with her husband. She and Kirkie enjoyed their weekend get-a-way at Wildwood Campgrounds for twenty years. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and a wonderful grandmother.

Joy is survived by her daughter: Janice DeRosier of Columbia; her son: William M. Hickam and wife Elizabeth M. Hickam of Denver; four grandchildren: Joanna Hickam; Ivy Hickam; Sarah DeRosier; George Sims and a host of nieces and nephews. Joy was preceded in death by her parents; husband and one brother; John K. Again.

Memorials may be made to The Columbia Area Senior Center, Parkade Baptist Church or the Food Bank of Central and Northern Missouri.
