David Norman Martin, 83, of Columbia passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at The Westbury. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 AM on Friday, May 17, 2024 at Memorial Park Cemetery.
David was born on November 2, 1940 in Nevada, Missouri, the son of Floyd August Martin and Margaret Marion (Norman) Martin. He was raised in Columbia and was a 1958 graduate of Hickman High School. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mathematics. David’s career was spent working in Computer, Library and Information Sciences in the University of Missouri Library system.
On August 10, 1987, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Parey, who preceded him in death. David loved the outdoors, gardening and anything to do with caring for nature and the environment. He was very detailed oriented. He will be remembered for the countless lists of things to do. He could fix anything and had the right tool for every job. When Marilyn was coaching the students at West Junior High, David immersed himself in his role as her statistician. David always cared for and supported humanitarian causes. He was a long-time active member of the Columbia United Church of Christ.
David is survived by two daughters: Barbara Martin of Jefferson City; Carolyn Martin Chang and her husband, Brian, of Sedona, Arizona, and their daughter: Marilyn Chang; a bonus daughter: Sue Kimes and her husband Tim Gibbons, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and their son: Micah Gibbons; one sister: Emilie Moore of New Haven, Missouri, and Bette Keene Scavone, the mother of Barbara and Carolyn.
Memorials, in David’s memory, may be made to the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri.
