Brenda Irene Douglas (nee Rice), age 78, a resident of Rocheport, MO, passed away on October 19, 2023. Affectionately known as "Aunt Bea" to her family, Brenda was born on December 19, 1944, in Columbia, MO, to John and Irene (nee Garrett) Rice. In 1962, she received her high school diploma from Moberly High School. On June 10, 1982, Brenda married R.L. Douglas during a two-week motorcycle trip to Las Vegas, NV.
In 1985, Brenda commenced her career with the Columbia Police Department, where she was tasked with digitizing paper police reports into microfilm. Throughout her tenure, Brenda held various positions, culminating in her appointment as a head administrative assistant. Brenda was instrumental in preparing numerous police officers for promotions to Sergeant and Captain ranks. Her coworkers held her in high esteem, particularly for her exceptional management skills, which earned her the reputation of one who "runs thunderdome." In 2011, Brenda's efforts in establishing a more efficient payroll system were recognized with the Civilian Employee of the Year award. After almost 27 years of service, Brenda retired from the police department in 2012. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years, demonstrating her commitment to serving the community.
Brenda had a deep appreciation for nature, taking pleasure in tending to her flowers, observing hummingbirds, and riding motorcycles with her husband R.L. However, above all else, she cherished spending time with her family. Brenda's love for her loved ones will continue to be an enduring presence in our lives.
Brenda is survived by her husband R.L. Douglas, son, Jeff Adams, as well as her stepchildren, Tracy Westbrook and Billy Douglas. She is also survived by her siblings, Jim Rice and Jane (Howard) Colley, in addition to several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
Brenda's parents, brother John (Joyce) Rice, and her infant son Frank, preceded her in death.
A visitation to pay respects to Brenda will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home located at 1217 Business Loop 70 W, Columbia, MO 65202. Following the visitation, there will be a funeral service at 1:00 PM at the same location. The service will be followed by a graveside service at Memorial Park Cemetery.
