As you know Bill and I were very dear friends for 47 years.  We went through training together and departed for overseas together also.  I still remember all the Ops we did and the hard time and good times we shared.  We shared many stories even after we retired from CIA.  We were very lucky to have such wonderful wives like you and Joanne and great kids.   We were also lucky to have served with the officers we did with many now with Bill in Heaven.  You truly honored Bill with the funeral serve you arranged and the reception afterwards.  I am sure he would be proud seeing all the former Agency Colleagues that were there to say goodby.   I am also sure being a former Marine he has all ready assumed his position Guarding Heavens Gates.   I will truly miss by good friend Bill. Ed Phillips

Always comes as a shock as we march along to hear of a good, dear Friend cross over. I very much enjoyed Bill's company, wry humor, insight and conversations and guess he found me amusing enough to engage with. Very down to earth guy, with honest, blunt opinions yet open to the views of others. I trusted him and that is rare and important in this world.
  You are not alone at this time for many feel the departure his good Soul. I feel the emptiness in my heart but also am pleased to be connected to him in Spirit

I knew Bill as a friend who wanted to contribute to not only work-related projects, but to the enjoyment of life by those around him. He was thoughtful and generous, proud of being from Chicago, proud of being a Marine, and proud of working for the CIA. He loved his family and keeping his Agency associates up to date on Nicholas' development and accomplishments. At times it was a challenge walking through the cafeteria with Bill because he would stop to exchange pleasantries with his many friends, inquire about their well-being, and leave them with the latest addition to his repertoire of jokes. He enjoyed life and wanted those around him to do the same. I looked forward to meeting Bill for morning coffee or lunch so I could get his commentary on current events. Often he would start the commentary The word on the street is  insert topic here. Then he would go into a discussion of any hidden agendas he saw, and he saw them routinely. In Bill's mind there was always a hidden agenda behind the word on the street. I would, on occasion, ask Bill how he acquired the ability to discern hidden agendas. His answer was always, I am from Chicago.

The last words of Dwight David Eisenhower might well apply here; I've always loved my my wife,  my children, my grandchildren, and I've always loved my country.  I want to go. God, take me."

Bill is a good man, who served our country well.  When I see him next, I want the great story teller to again recount his exploits. 

In the interim, I have little doubt Bill will keep God laughing.

I am sooo very sorry to learn of Bill's passing.  The world is poorer without him.
I'm also aware that my sense of loss is based on the gift I enjoyed of having met and known Bill, for which I will always be grateful.  That is the silver lining in this difficult time.

Stefanie, I hold you and your dear family in my prayers during this painful time of your LOSS. Joe and I got to know you & Bill when our German conversation KREIS was formed. I enjoy speaking German with you, and Bill understood most of our talks. I remember him as a generous, joyful HOST when our Kreis met at your lovely home. Son Greg was glad to spend time with you & Bill during his illness. Masses will be prayed for Bill and your family at St. John Evangelist Church in Columbia.

Dear Mooney Family, I knew and worked with Bill infrequently over about 30 years. It was an easy, reliable relationship because I always found him to be consistent in his outlook and performance. He was a good guy, of good humor, disciplined, reasoned approach to tasks and relationships, and always happy to see old friends.  He was successful in many ways because of his high standards. I'm sure his family and close friends miss him terribly, as do many who knew and worked with him.  My profound condolences on his passing, but God has called him home.  RIP, Bill.
