Tize Ma

He was born in Weijiaca, a remote small village in Shanxi province, China, to father Ma Weifu and mother Yin Xiumei. He is survived by his mother, two younger sisters, three younger brothers, his loving wife Fan Q Xiao, daughters Julia and Elisha Ma, and granddaughters Ada and Alice.

After high school, Tize taught elementary, middle, and high school and helped the local children to get a better education. He also served as a rural high school principal. He graduated from Nanjing University with a bachelors in physics as the first one in his family to go to college. He later came to the United States for higher education through the CUSPEA program. He obtained a Masters in Nuclear Physics in 1983 and a PhD in Space Physics in 1986 from University of Iowa. After his PhD, he was a research professor at the Utah State University in Logan, Utah. He also worked at Citrix, Convera, and other high tech companies as a senior engineer. For the last 20 years, he worked at the US Patent and Trademark Office as a primary patent examiner.

Tize enjoyed many hobbies and activities. Over his lifetime, he visited 40+ countries and areas across all seven continents (including Antarctica). He had a passion for camping, fishing, hiking, gardening, taichi, and he learned to horseback ride.

Tize Ma was an exceptionally intelligent, wise, kind, caring, and a loving father and husband. These traits stand out to everyone who knew him. He will be dearly missed by all.

马提则，于2024年9月26日在美国马里兰州埃利科特城的家中不幸去世，终年69岁。

他出生于中国山西省魏家岔村，父亲是马维富, 母亲是尹秀梅。他身后留下了母亲、两个妹妹、三个弟弟、爱妻萧帆、爱女马书虹和马慧虹, 以及孙女锦玥和铭玥。

高中毕业以后，提则曾在乡村的小学、中学和高中任教，并担任农校高中的校长。提则毕业于南京大学，他是家里几代人中第一个大学生，也是全村、乃至全县的第一个大学生。他于1981获得南京大学的物理学学士学位。其间，他通过了 CUSPEA 交流项目的考试，来到美国爱荷华大学接受更高等的教育。他于 1983 年获得核物理硕士学位，于 1986 年获得空间物理博士学位。之后，他在犹他州立大学担任科研教授多年，又在 Citrix, Convera 等大型高科技公司任高级工程师。在过去的 20 年里直到去世，他在美国国家专利商标局担任专利主审员，曾获优秀职工奖。

提则有很多业余爱好。他热爱旅游，访问过的地方遍及七大洲，包括南北极等 40 多个国家和地区。他热爱露营、钓鱼、徒步爬山、种植蔬果、太极拳，还学会了骑马。

提则是一位非常乐观、聪明、睿智、善良、体贴、乐于助人、充满爱心的丈夫、父亲、兄长、朋友和同事，这些优秀品质让所有认识他的人印象深刻，所有人都会深深地怀念他。

A visitation for Tize will be held Saturday, October 5, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Witzke Funeral Homes Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD 21045, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Interment will occur at Columbia Memorial Park, 12005 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, MD 21029 at 12:30 PM.
