Steven John Stanhope, 66 of New Market, MD and Fairhaven, MA passed away on Friday August 2, at home with family. After beating an aggressive battle with prostate cancer, he passed away after a brief but intense battle with a rare form of lung cancer.
Born May 20, 1958, in Attleboro, MA. He was the son of Robert and Nancy Stanhope. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and father-in-law James Struble.
Steven graduated from Attleboro High School in 1976 and Boston University in 1980. He went on to study at the University of MD, completing his MA degree in 1982 and his PhD in Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology and Anatomy in 1985.
He worked at the National Institutes of Health as the Director of Biomechanics and Motion Analysis from 1985 through his retirement in 2008. Following his retirement from NIH, he continued his career as the Associate VP of Research, and full professor in Biomechanics and Motion Analysis at the University of Delaware until his second retirement in 2023. He had a storied career in science and research, publishing hundreds of scientific papers and speaking throughout the world on Biomechanics, particularly regarding its application to clinical populations. He had a particular interest and expertise in working with amputees to optimize prosthetic performance. He held multiple patents and created technology that is actively used today. He was instrumental in advancing the field of Biomechanics in his research and launched many notable careers through teaching and mentoring.
He is survived by his wife, Melody M. (Struble) Stanhope. Melody and Steven met at the University of MD in 1983 and had a devoted partnership for over 40 years. They married in 1986, raised two amazing sons, traveled the world, bought and sold many houses and boats, tackled careers, rescued dogs, and spent many hours on, in or near salt water. Growing up on his beloved West Island, Steven was always happiest with salt water around him, a fishing pole in his hand, and a family member or a dear friend by his side.
He is survived by his sons, Colin John Stanhope, (Elizabeth Dickey), Baltimore MD, and Ian James Stanhope, Lakewood CO; his mother in laws P. Carolyn Bell, and Carol Struble, New Market MD; brother William Stanhope (Carol), Naples, FL; sister, Linda Stanhope (Greg Lnenicka), Niskayuna, NY; brother in law Marty Struble (Kim), Eldersburg MD; nieces Emily Nault (Dan) London, England and Katie Lnenicka (Ryan Amodeo), Saratoga Springs, NY; nephews Eric Struble and Carson Struble, Eldersburg MD and Evan Stanhope (Jordana), Hoboken NJ; lifelong friends Michael Bernstein, Barrington, RI and Paul Nitso, Londonderry, NH; as well as numerous friends and colleagues throughout the world.
Memorial contributions in Steven’s honor may be made to any scientific research endeavor of your choosing, University of Maryland School of Medicine or Bridging Life Hospice, Westminster MD. More than anything Steven would want those that cared about him to go after their dreams!
Visitation for Steven will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Witzke Funeral Homes Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD 21045, where a memorial service will begin at 1:00 PM. A light luncheon will follow the service.
