Rebecca Davis Chalk

Rebecca (Davis) Chalk was born on April 23, 1945 to Jimmie Lee Davis and Earline (Timmons) Davis in Effingham, South Carolina who both preceded her in death. She was their fifth child welcomed into our family.

Becky graduated from Wilson High School in Florence, South Carolina in 1963. She was a kindred spirit with many and enjoyed her time most with family and friends. She left for New York on a sleep-in job to start her adult life and was quickly relocated to Connecticut where her life began. She settled in the Meriden area where a few of her siblings soon followed and they created a number of lifelong friendships.

Becky’s professional career began with caregiving which spoke to who she was and soon led to a career in nursing. She worked for a reputable gynecologist and optometrist where they welcomed her with open arms in to their family. Through her role, she met many who led her to the subsequent chapters of her life.

Becky had a lifelong passion for learning and believed her success was dependent on furthering her education and obtaining her college degree. Becky obtained her Bachelors of Science with a dual major in Business Administration and Public Administration from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, CT. During her educational pursuit, she met the late Bertrand P. Williams where they had a loving relationship which resulted in them welcoming her first beautiful daughter, Teshia Rebecca (Williams) Davis in 1975.

In 1979, Becky was introduced to her late husband Clifford Lee Chalk by Linda “Yvonne” Chalk-Watts. The sparks were immediate where they married that October of 1979 in Hartford, CT. Through their union, Becky welcomed her second beautiful daughter, LaToya Melissa Chalk in 1984.

Becky and her late husband Clifford entered her next chapter of life by building their dream home in Tolland, Connecticut. Here they dreamt of raising their children for many years to come. Their dream was interrupted when Clifford passed away suddenly after four short months in their new home. Some might have thought this would be life-changing for them all, instead Becky persevered with determination to give her girls the life she dreamed of. She went back to college to pursue another degree in nursing which had always been a passion of hers at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. She was quickly introduced to the field of higher education by working a part-time job at Manchester Community-Technical College in Manchester, CT which led to her career in financial aid in higher education.

Becky’s career flourished as she was always highly-motivated, had a versatile skill set and was an extremely results-oriented professional. She quickly advanced in her career from part-time Education Assistant to the Assistant Director of Financial Aid, holding her role for seven years. Her contributions to her family and the community in sharing her expertise was paramount to the success of many.

Through her nurturing spirit, she educated many and modeled success, ultimately, changing lives of more people than we will ever know.

Becky was always looking to get back to her southern roots. Since it all started with her friendship with Yvonne and Teshia leaving for college in the south, she moved her and LaToya to Columbia, Maryland in 1995. Here she started her next chapter by working at University of Maryland Baltimore County as an Assistant Director of Financial Aid to then assume a role at Sojourner Douglass College in Baltimore, MD as their Director of Financial Aid. She took her work very seriously and her work ethic was powerful to the success of many students. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, she retired from her work in the summer of 2013 and spent her final years in Laurel, Maryland in close proximity to her girls, son-in-law and grandson.

Becky was a loving mom to not only her girls, but to so many more. If you were a friend, you were truly family. She welcomed anyone into her immaculate home…it had to be spotless with a home cooked meal as she was an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed taking long walks, going to visit family from near and far, catching up with many on the phone, traveling and vacationing to Myrtle Beach or as far as Germany. She had a passion for reading, especially religion and fellowshipping with her discipleship sisters within her church family at New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD. What made her smile the brightest was seeing and talking with her grandson, Taison. She was so happy to have a grandchild and see him flourish.

Becky leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters: Teshia R. (Terrell) Davis and LaToya M. Chalk; a grandson Taison Nasir Davis; all from Maryland. Two sisters: Bernice (John) Lucas and Catherine (Leroy) Williams of Meriden, CT. Two brothers: Harmon (Hazel) Davis and Ulysses “Mickey” (Gayle) Davis both of South Carolina. Sister-in-laws: Mattie Ruth Davis, Rosalie Thorpe, Janese Bolden, Goldie Ann Davis, and Linda Chalk of Connecticut, and Linda “Yvonne” Chalk-Watts of Maryland; Brother-In-Laws: Edmund Chalk and Warren Bolden, Jr.; 40 Nieces and Nephews; Special Friends: Betty Haskins, Rosella Sharpe, Ruth Williams, Serena Jackson from Connecticut; Special Caregivers: Sandy Ali and Melva Robinson both from Maryland and a host of other relatives and friends from across the country.

Besides her husband, Becky is preceded in death by two sisters: Hattie Mae Johnson and Linda Sue Hunter; three brothers: Cleveland “Slay” Davis, Lewis “LC” Davis and Jimmie Lee Davis Jr., along with two nephews and additional in-laws.

The family will receive friends and family on Friday, November 12, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. at Witzke Funeral Home, 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD; and on Saturday, November 13, 2021 from 9-10 a.m. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2021 from 10-11 a.m. The burial will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens, 2150 Mt. View Road, Marriottsville, MD 21104 at 12:00 noon.
