Hazel Marie was born in La Junta, Colorado to Manuelita and John Trujillo. She grew up in La Junta with her brother, Orlando, her 2 sisters, Christina and Linda Mae. All four siblings were raised with the help of their grandparents, Julianita and Ricardo Gonzales. La Junta is also where Hazel Marie met and married her husband, Jerry Zavala Munoz. She gave birth to 6 children, Jerry, Sonya, Christopher, Timothy, Melissa and Joel. After the first 3 children were born, the family relocated to California, where she gave birth to the younger three.
While being a devoted wife and mother, Hazel Marie followed her passion of being an educator and returned to school. She successfully graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree from USC and quickly became a much-loved teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Although she loved her years of teaching and the impact she had on the students, she felt the continued call in her guidance. So, she continued her education at the Azusa Pacific University and became a well-respected school psychologist until her retirement in 2006.
Hazel Marie also had a love for traveling, with her favorite places being the Holy Land and New York City. Despite having a large family and circle of friends, she loved and cherished each and made all feel important. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends and creating memories.
More importantly, Hazel Marie was a devout Catholic Christian, with a deep love and respect for Mother Mary, mother of Jesus. Hazel Marie was a great influence and role model to her family, always displaying high morals, values and character. Her strong faith in Jesus Christ led her husband and family to God.
Hazel Marie is survived by her six children, 17 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, nieces and nephews. She is preceded by her husband Jerry, brother Orlie, mother Mandy, father John, and grandparents, Julia and Ricardo.
