Helen graduated from Cutbank High School and Billings Business College. Soon after graduation, she was employed as an IBM keypunch operator at Black Hills Army Depot, Igloo, SD.
She married John J. Kane, Jr. (Jack) on Nov. 23, 1944, (Thanksgiving Day) at St. James Catholic Church in Edgemont, SD. Jack and Helen raised a family of five in and near Edgemont, while partnering together in various family businesses, including ranching and farming, a Kane Implement John Deere dealership, and J.J. Kane & Sons Construction Co. Jack and Helen had a successful hog farrowing and feeder pig operation as their last business endeavor.
Helen participated in Fall River County politics. She was an active member of St. James Parish, Edgemont, SD; St. Patrick’s Parish, Chadron, NB; and Corpus Christi Parish, Colorado Springs, CO. In 2004, she received the North Colorado Springs Rotary Club Nifty 50 Award for selfless giving to her community. Recently, she volunteered her time to St. Ann’s Circle and the Springs Village Care Center.
In addition to raising five children and working in the family businesses, Helen enjoyed sewing, social and ballroom dancing, and golfing. She also was one of the original founders of Edgemont’s first golf course and continued to golf into her 70’s. Throughout their working lives and retirement, she assisted her husband, Jack, with the publishing of numerous literary works and a family memoir.
Family and friends were extremely important in Helen’s life. She is survived by her children: Kathleen (Marty) Amt of Mt. Rainier, MD; John (Diane) Kane of Newcastle, WY; Brian (Patti Roselle) Kane of Johnstown, CO; Constance (Mike) Mohrman of Denver, CO; Daniel (Rondi Stratton) Kane of Monument, CO, as well as eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Caroline and Frank Ray; grandson, Sean Lyle Stratton Kane; and husband, Jack.
A vigil service will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Colorado Springs on Friday, October 28th at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will follow on Saturday, October 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2318 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
