Sukey Skousen, of Colorado Springs, CO, passed away on December 6th, 2024 at the age of 71, a day short of her 72nd birthday. She was born Suzanne Holly Stark in 1952 to Nina and Paul Stark in Excelsior, Minnesota. Her childhood was spent in Excelsior and Fargo, North Dakota, camping and swimming at the beach with her siblings and cousin, Loree. She continued to visit home throughout her life. An avid reader, she graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in Library Science, and was a lifelong educator and librarian working for Colorado Springs School Districts 11 and 49, as well as various positions in the school system in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
She was adventurous, once traveling solo by bus across the United States. She fell in love with the southwest and decided to move to New Mexico. The mountains were calling and she just had to go. While working in one of her favorite places in New Mexico, she met Daniel Skousen and was later married. She bore twin sons, Dane and Eric, while Danny was stationed in the Air Force at Clark AB, Philippines. Several assignments later, the family settled in Colorado Springs in 1990.
Sukey became actively involved in local community matters, and later in life, Parkinson’s Disease initiatives across multiple charities including the YMCA Parkinson’s Exercise Program and The Unsteady Hand. She loved to read and made beautiful homemade jewelry and artwork until the twilight of her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing cards and mahjong, watching movies, and garage saleing. She was quirky, fun-loving, and the life of the party.
Her father, Paul Stark, and two brothers Jimmy and Steve Stark, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Daniel; sons Dane (Jessica) and Eric (Erin); her mother, Nina Stark; sister, Jane Stark; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She will be fondly remembered as a loving mother, community advocate, close friend, and caring wife. The family would like to thank all of her family, friends, and healthcare workers that gave her strength while Sukey bravely battled Parkinson’s Disease for over 27 years.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at Swan-Law Funeral Home, 501 N Cascade Ave. Colorado Springs, Colorado on December 30, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Reception to follow at the Skousen home. Private interment will be held at a later date in the Pikes Peak National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Pikes Peak Library District.
