Richard is survived by his wife of almost 75 years, Norma (Butler); a son, Dennis Carter & wife Cheryl of Ellicott; a daughter, Linda Edgar and husband Mike of Colorado Springs; five grandkids, Shannon Carter, Ryan Carter, Devin Carter, Jennifer Lessman & Jordan Curtis; fifteen great-grandkids and four great-great-grandkids. Richard is also survived by two sisters, Doris Binder (Ray) and Norma Rae Carter. He is preceded in death by parents H. Raymond Carter & Elsie Carter and sister, Vera Mae Barker (Norman).
Richard was born at home in Calhan, CO and lived there all of his life. He farmed and ranched in the Calhan area, worked at a lumber mill and a Texaco gas station before becoming the manager of the Pikes Peak Co-op for 27 years.
Richard enjoyed participating in sports, playing baseball and basketball as a high school athlete and town team basketball and baseball after high school. Over the years, he loved watching basketball and other sporting events, especially when kids and grandkids were involved. Prior to retirement he began to golf and had a great time golfing with Norma and in leagues and tournaments with Dennis and other family members & friends. He was fortunate to continue to play until age 91, both in Colorado and Arizona. He and Norma spent their winters the last few years in Arizona and he often said he wished they would have gone “south” years sooner. He commented often that “life is good” and he lived it fully and with an unconditional love for “his” Norma and his family.
