From 1943 to 1946 Norm served in the US Army and was in combat in Europe during WWII with the 11th Armored Division, 3rd Army under General George S. Patton. The Division faced German gunfire in the Battle of the Bulge and in 1945 Norm was among those who helped liberate concentration camps in Austria near the end of the war.
Norm earned degrees in Geology and Civil Engineering from City College of New York and Rutgers University and began his career in highway construction supervising crews building the NJ Turnpike. He later earned a Master’s in Public Administration at The George Washington University, and in 1995 at the age of 70, earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology. After retiring from the US Department of Transportation, he counseled substance abusers while working as a professor at Bowie State University earning tenure until retiring (for a second time) at age 82. Norm continued to do consulting work, obtaining a Professional Engineer license, and reviewing engineering projects. He loved research and mentoring young people as well as all things “technology”; enjoying computers, texting, and the internet well into his 90s.
Norm leaves behind his loving wife of 68 years, Roberta Verman Cohen, their two children Alan (Sheree) Cohen of Columbus, Ohio and Karen McAllister of Colorado Springs, CO; three grandchildren Brian (Erica) Cohen, Dr. Nicole McAllister, and Shana Morris; and four great- grandchildren Camden Cohen and Connor, Kinsey, and Kaydee Morris.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Sons of Israel section, Wednesday, January 19 at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Compassus Hospice in Colorado Springs or to a charity of your choice.
