Mary Ann Smith, 98, daughter of Bernard and Helen (Meister) Knievel of West Point, Nebraska, was taken to heaven on Friday morning, April 10, 2015. Mary Ann was born on December 31, 1916, the fourth of ten children, at her parent’s farm home near West Point.
Mary Ann attended the 1st through 12th grades at Guardian Angels Catholic School in West Point, NE, and graduated in May of 1934. She attended Wayne State College at Wayne, NE, and received her Teaching Certificate in 1936. She taught in country school districts in the West Point area for five years. Later she moved to Omaha, NE, to attend business school.
Mary Ann worked as a secretary for various businesses in the Omaha, NE, for several years and then as an executive secretary for the Army Corp of Engineers for many years where she met Spencer Smith. Mary Ann and Spencer were married at St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Omaha on September 26, 1960.
Mary Ann is survived by a brother, Paul, in Omaha, NE, and a sister, Henrietta Grewe (Arthur) in Casa Grande, AZ. She was preceded in death by her brothers Thomas, Jerome, Leo, Rudy, and Edwin and by her sisters Dorothy Mac Innes and Sister Angelita.
A funeral mass celebrating Mary Ann’s life will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2318 N. Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO, on Wednesday, April 15th, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation at the church will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by a rosary at 10:30 a.m. Mary Ann will be cremated and buried later with her deceased husband, Spencer, at the National Military Cemetery, Sturgis, SD.
