Gary was born in Stroud, Oklahoma, on November 10th, 1948, and was later adopted in Colorado Springs by Nellie (Jerry) and Albert Crumb. It was in Colorado Springs that he spent the next nearly 70 years becoming a fixture in our great city. There was hardly an outing to a restaurant or store that didn’t include Gary running into someone he knew, sometimes even in another state or country.
Gary started high school at Wasson, but later moved to Mitchell when it opened as a new high school, becoming one of the first Marauders of Colorado Springs. After a few jobs through high school and shortly thereafter, he started his 30+ year career with the City of Colorado Springs, first as a mechanic at the city garage, and later as a power plant mechanic at all of the CSU power plants. Even after retiring from Colorado Springs Utilities, he returned several times to assist in the maintenance of Martin Drake, Bridsall, and Nixon power plants.
Gary and his first wife, Christa, were blessed with three children, Nick, Kathy, and Tammy. He later married his second wife, Sue, on May 4th 1985, and shared in parenting her two sons, Doug and Jeff Edmunds.
When not helping to keep the lights on for the residents of Colorado Springs, Gary had a passion for Corvettes, and was a member of the Colorado Springs Corvette Club for 47 years. He was also heavily involved in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, including serving as an official for several years. He loved working on cars and re-building engines for friends and family, as well as participating in competition engine building. He was even able to serve on a pit crew for an IRL (Indy Racing League) team for 2 races. He was also passionate about rescuing animals, driving rescue vans to and from other states and within Colorado, and occasionally bringing home wayward animals to become part of the family. Gary was a member of First United Methodist Church in downtown Colorado Springs, where he drove and helped maintain the church buses, and volunteered in multiple other ways. Another post-retirement activity he loved was traveling around the country in his and Sue’s RV, and traveling regularly to Mazatlan, Mexico.
Gary is survived by his wife, Susan Crumb, sister Carolyn Rauch, two daughters, Kathy and Tammy, and two stepsons, Doug (Nicola) and Jeff Edmunds, and their families, including grandchildren (great grandchildren) Joni (Joseph and Michael), Christopher (Owen and Wyatt), Kyle (Ambry and Xavier), Kevin, Cheyenne, Brandon, Madelyn, Jessie Jo, Ryan, and Ella. He was preceded in death by his son, Nicholas Albert Crumb, his brother Dewayne Crumb, and his parents Nellie (Jerry) and Albert Crumb.
Our “Grumpa” will be missed dearly by all of his family and friends.
Gary’s memorial service will be held in the sanctuary at First United Methodist Church, located at 420 North Nevada Avenue in Colorado Springs, on Saturday, May 28th at 10:00 AM.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.Swan-Law.com for the Crumb family.
