Francis Charles O'Toole was born August 3, 1928, in St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs to Francis J. and Catherine Scarritt O'Toole. He spent his childhood in Colorado Springs and Green Mountain Falls, attending Manitou schools. In 1956 he married Virginia Winters and they had two beautiful girls, Kim and Lori. He was widowed from Mary Lee Ashbury in 1972.
Frank joined the Navy when he was 17 and served on the USS Antietam in World War II, stationed at Saipan. He also served his country in the Air Force in the 1950s.
Life was a grand adventure for Frank and he was instantly at home anywhere he lived from New York to Los Angeles. Always, however, he came home to Colorado. In 1986 he found AA and spent the rest of his life helping others like himself who struggled along the path to sobriety. He would have joyfully celebrated 30 years of sobriety in 2016.
Frank was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Gibson and his half-sister, Martha Gayler. He is survived by his daughter, Lori Montgomery (Bill); grandchildren, Josh Hendry, April Porter, and Krissa Porter; great-grandchildren, Kaylee Halverson and Damon Trepany; nieces, Jody Jones and Jackie McCall; nephew, Conner Jones and the Scarritt cousins in California and Alabama.
Frank passed peacefully at the Bruce McCandless Veterans Home in Florence, Colorado on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. The family would like to thank the staff at Bruce McCandless for their superior care and kindness shown Frank in the seven years he resided there. Frank will be interred in the Southern Colorado Veterans Cemetery when it becomes available.
