Florence “Jane” Wilson passed away peacefully at a local medical rehabilitation facility in Colorado Springs, after a long battle with congestive heart failure and medical complications, on June 19th, 2020 at the age of 90. Born on March 30th, 1930 in Tiffin, Ohio, Jane was the daughter of Ms. Loree D. Smith and Mr. Carl Wyndham. Her family moved from Tiffin to Colorado Springs, Colorado when Jane was just three years old. After her parents divorced, Jane lived with her mother and sister at the Hornbeck Homestead in Florissant (now a well-known homestead in the National Register of Historic Places) for a brief time.
Later, her mother married a Florissant rancher named C.M. Snare upon moving to the Pikes Peak area. It was there that Jane attended Pinewood, a one room schoolhouse, from Grade 1 through Grade 8. For her ninth-grade year, she had to attend school in Cripple Creek, where she sustained her room and board by working as a nanny for a local family. Jane’s family later moved to Colorado Springs where they purchased a parcel of land on Airport Road, and so she continued her education at the Colorado Springs campus now known as William J. Palmer High School. During her time living there, she met the love of her life, her husband Harold J. Wilson, who was stationed at Peterson Air Force Base at the time. Not long after, Harold and Jane were married in 1947. Several years went by and eventually they purchased their “little house on the prairie” on a half-acre of that same parcel of land her parents had previously purchased.
As the years passed, Jane continued to be a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She took pleasure in decorating her home, making arts and crafts, cooking and baking, gardening, and she greatly enjoyed square dancing with her husband. Jane absolutely adored animals of all kinds, taking extreme joy in helping or caring for any creature that she could, but she held a particular love of cats and kittens. However, her best days were spent enjoying the time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, telling them stories about life growing up in the mountains and the many adventures and memories she shared with her family and friends. Jane was also proud of the roots her family had established in Colorado Springs throughout the decades (especially in how her real estate broker mother had founded Snare Reality). Jane was a devoted Catholic and was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, before attending services at Holy Apostles. In her later life, she was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and belonged to the Rampart Ramblers square dancers, but her greatest joy was being a part of her big and wonderful family.
Jane is survived by her three children: her eldest son, Robert E. Wilson of DeFuniak, Florida, and his wife Marianne; her daughter Janice L. Weil of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Janice’s husband Ralph; and her youngest son Thomas J. Wilson of Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is also survived by her brothers Max Snare Sr. of Craig, Colorado; Bill Snare of Ramah, Colorado; and James C. Snare of Fountain, Colorado. Jane had four grandchildren: Michael Wilson, Michelle Roche (Nee Wilson), Nicole Weil, and Natasha Weil. Jane was also blessed with her seven great grandchildren: Gabriel Baldwin, EJ and Sadie Roche, Brianna and Kailynn Weil, and Henry and Charlie Wilson. She is survived by several nieces and nephews as well.
Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Loree D. Smith and Carl Wyndham, and her stepfather C.M. Snare. Harold preceded his wife Jane in death, passing away December 29th, 1984. Jane’s sister Nancy Horst preceded her in death as well, passing away on June 29th, 2012.
Visitation will be held at 1:00 pm. on July 9th, 2020 at Memorial Gardens. Funeral/Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on July 9th, 2020 at Memorial Gardens as well and will be officiated by Deacon Bob Broussard. Jane’s final resting place will be the Abbey of Angels at Memorial Gardens located at 3825 Airport Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80910. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or to Happy Cats Haven located at 327 Manitou Avenue, Manitou Springs, CO 80829. Condolences may be offered at www.dove-witt.com.
