He graduated from Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs, there he played lacrosse and football. He continued his education with a BA from UNC Greeley and also attended the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, California. This was the catalyst for Derek working with gems and helping others learn more about them.
Derek held numerous sales positions. He had many passions, which included archery, gun and target shooting, Jeep and 4 wheeling, MMA and Cage fighting, boxing, kayaking and a history buff, particularly WWII stories.
Derek is survived by his parents Thomas and Rosie Schultz; sister, Ariel Whitlock.
A memorial service for Derek will be held Friday, June 18, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Springs Lighthouse Church, 4777 N. Academy Blvd, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80918.
