She is survived by her husband Cliff, daughter Robi, son, Dr. Scott Howe (Julie), six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Darlene met the love of her life at Cheyenne Mountain High School where they were classmates and danced traditional square dance as a couple under the leadership of Dr. Lloyd Shaw. Darlene and Cliff eloped to Raton, NM on April 11, 1953. While raising Robi and Scott, she obtained her teaching degree and a Masters Degree in computer technology. She taught Sunday school classes for children at First Presbyterian church as well as 2nd and 6th grades at Broadmoor Elementary and Cheyenne Mountain Elementary. She created and sewed amazing costumes for The Broadmoor Ice Shows and the first Civil War reenactment uniforms for Ft. Carson. Darlene and Cliff enjoyed traveling and camping in their motor home and fishing, especially from their pontoon at Blue Mesa.
One of Darlene’s greatest joys in life was watching six grand children grow to maturity. They include Dr. Sara Howe, soon to be Dr’s Laura Howe and Jessica Howe, and Katie Howe who is a sophomore in college. Granddaughter Erin Callaghan-Swartz is the 7 year owner of Hot Rod Dog Grooming in Windsor, CO and has the only great-grandchild, Baron. Grady, the lone grandson, is cultivating his talents in the culinary arts.
Cliff expresses his unwavering love, “Nobody could ask for a better 60 years! Love forever.” Darlene and Cliff’s shared tombstone holds the phrase applied to them their senior year in high school, “She Came, He Saw, She Conquered”.
