Conrad L Kauk, 92, of Colorado Springs, passed into the arms of our Heavenly Father on September 23, 2024, in Denver, Colorado. Sergeant First Class (SFC) Kauk was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 15, 1932 to Bertha Louise and John Evon Kauk. He was one of 6 children who worked on the family farm in Johnstown, North Dakota.
He joined the military at the age of 18 and spent over 20 years in the army. He spent 3 years in Korea while becoming an expert and instructor in artillery survey that led him to his second career as a land surveyor, where he spent 20 years with United Planning and Engineering. SFC Kauk earned many rewards including the Army Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Kings Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Citation, and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.
He met the love of his life, Ayako Saito, in 1954 while serving in Yamagata, Japan. They married in 1955 at the Tokyo embassy and spent 38 beautiful years together until Ayako's untimely death in 1993. They raised 2 children and have 3 grandsons and 5 great grandchildren.
Conrad was an avid sportsman throughout his life. He enjoyed skiing and long distance running; he even completed the Pikes Peak marathon for several years. He was a decorated marksman who was awarded a Lifetime Master Classification as well as many rapid class and long range awards He also loved motorcycling and traveling. He was an active member of the Pikes Peak BMW Club and rode thousands of miles throughout his life. He enjoyed visiting areas in the USA and other countries as well as sailing the seas on numerous cruise ships.
He met Hedy O'Grodny in 1995 and they spent the next 25 years enjoying adventures together. SFC Kauk is also preceded in death by Hedy O'Grodny.
Conrad is survived by 2 sisters Barbara Wager and Betty Allen, 2 children Debbi Harlow (Tom Harlow), Tamie Haney (Rick Haney), 3 grandsons, Brian S.Harlow (Missy Harlow),
Matthew Lee Harlow, T. Grady Harlow (Olivia Harlow) and 5 great grandchildren, Parker, Taylor, Caleb, Logan, and Bennett.
Funeral services will be held at 3pm, Monday September 30, 2024 at Memorial Gardens Chapel, Colorado Springs. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens.
