It was my privilege for a short period of time to be mentored by Senator Charlie and Phyllis.  We spent time together in their home and in mine.  I was impressed with his commitment to his faith, his wife, and his children.  While he was a popular law maker, it was also important to him that he hold in proper perspective the honor of public office.  He was the law maker who taught me to be still and listen to the voters to hear what they were really saying and wanting.  A good place that I remember he liked to do his listening was in barber shops.  It was important to him to represent the people who had elected him.  He got me started asking the question, "What are you hearing"?  He was a gentleman with a strong work ethic.  I remember when the Senate was not meeting, he and Phyllis would be back on the farm.  She and I met together some and he would come in and join us on his break time.  Since we liked to talk government and politics, it would have been easy to let the minutes run into hours, but he was disciplined not to do this.  I was impressed with both his and Phyllis' example as a couple who deeply loved each other and were a successful team in whatever they tackled.  I extend sympathy and empathy to Phyllis and the family.  From my memory I do not think I met the children but I heard wonderful things about them. Phyllis, I've just become aware of Charlie's passing and I am so sorry.   It has been years since I saw the two of you, but I do remember you and Charlie too from our days, long ago, in the little First Baptist Church in Mound City.   I remember attending your wedding.   Your father was my family's optometrist.   Once upon a time, Jim Greer and I went to your parents' home where your father recorded our musical performances on an audio recorder, cutting grooves in a black vinyl disk as we played.

What a wonderful connection the Angell family has been to mine. I remember growing up in the Baptist Church in Plains, Phyllis accompanying the service and the wonderful choir they had back then. Charlie was so outgoing and a great leader of the church. One of my first jobs was working for him. He was a very hard worker and meticulous in the quality of his work. I think some of that rubbed off on me. I still have to keep the furrow as straight as I can, when I do a job. He was a great friend and boss to my Dad for many years, I very much appreciate that. He was also a great help to my immediate family, even when he lived in Colorado Springs and we didn't get to see Phyllis & him often. Charlie was a great example of a man that truly cared for those around him.

My great uncle Charlie has always held a special place in my heart. I kept hearing family say that Charlie was very on top of what was going on when I was so sick a few years ago. After I was on my road to recovery I recieved the bulletin from his church... Where my name was mentioned several times, in the prayer requests and praise reports. That made me feel so special!! I remember going to Colorado Springs most of my childhood, and our big family picnics, I will never forget my uncle Charlie's voice. It was so unique ... I will think of you often Charlie! You must be having so much there with your mom, my Gigi! You are definetly my GREAT uncle Charlie!!

My Uncle Charlie was a very passionate, competitive man with strong beliefs.  I respect that about him so much.  Almost every summer we would visit my Grandma Adele Angell in Colorado Springs and were fortunate to also spend some time with my Uncle Charlie & Aunt Phyllis.  I always remember my Uncle Charlie's smile and laugh.  This side of my family (my mom's side) has been so good about spending time together at family reunions every 4-5 years.  I hope we can continue the tradition for years to come.  I am so happy that I was able to be a part of Uncle Charlie's life.  We love you and we will miss you!

Uncle Charlie always made me feel loved and accepted. As a child I spent many good times in his home with Aunt Phyllis and cousins Roger and Pam. He was a good listener and so encouraging about my faith in Christ. When Alyson was very ill Uncle Charlie was there to pray for her and our family and to enlist his friends at church to pray, too. I could not wait to see Charlie any time I thought there was going to be a chance...at any Angell family event, in church or just hanging out with my Dad.  He always had the best smile on his face...he always seemed to care for everyone that he came in contact with especially me...but I imagine he made everyone feel like that. We so appreciated being at the wonderful service for Charlie on Monday morning! 
It is so difficult to lose a brother but appreciating his life and his living it made it very meaningful.  We were so happy we could be there!

Charlie was a wonderful "big" brother, who enjoyed teasing me. He nick-named me "Snookie Rat" when I was a baby (after the cartoon character, baby Snookums.)  Anytime I called him or he called me up until the past few months, Charlie would always say, "Well hello Snookie Rat!"  I knew he was really sick when this fond tradition between us stopped. Beyond the immense love I have for my brother, I also proudly tell others that he was a man of absolute integrity and honor as well as a man of unswerving faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I will miss him terribly until we meet again in Glory.

My most vivid memories of Uncle Charlie are from when I was a page in the Kansas Senate when he was the Senator from Meade County (1972-1984). Growing up in Topeka I had the opportunity several times in the late 70s. I always felt so honored when he asked and proud when I saw him stand and speak in the Senate chamber.  Throughout his life I admired Uncle Charlie for his faith, his wit and wisdom, and his unconditional love for me, my wife and my family. I will forever be proud to say I am Charlie Angell's nephew.

I met Uncle Charlie and Aunt Phyllis for the first time when I attended the Kansas Day celebration with Daren in January 1983 at the Ramada Inn in Topeka, KS.  We had been dating about four months, give or take. It was "ornery at first sight" for Charlie and me and we had great fun teasing each other over the past 31 years. He will always have a special place in my heart.  Much love to you all, Leslie

Charlie was a kind-spirited man and we always enjoyed seeing him in church and speaking with him.  He will be greatly missed.

I only met Uncle Charlie a couple of times but have heard about him for 30 years. The entire Angell family is loving and they always rally around each other in times of need. That spirit extended to others; Charlie and Phyllis brought Grandma Angell to my father's funeral in 1999 (or maybe she brought them!). God bless your family especially now and thanks for your friendship.

As successful and brilliant as Charlie was he still listened to people.  Oh, what a lost art that is!  He did not listen so that he could present his own argument (though he was a debater extraordinaire!), or convince one to come to his side (though he often did!).  He listened because he VALUED other people's thoughts and ideas.  He even allowed himself to be affected and changed by other people's thoughts and ideas - the utmost of respect!  He showed me how I think God looks at his children:  with love and respect and with an attitude that they are worthy of his time.  He will never be forgotten.  I remember Charlie when I suffer from the plague of doubt.

We attended church with Charlie and Phyllis years ago in Plains. He was a fine example of a Christian man. Our Sympathy to Phyllis and the family. Sincerely, Von and Virginia Miller

We appreciated Charlie's knowledge and wisdom. I looked forward to his comments when I was a substitute teacher for the Sunday School class he attended. He was a kind and generous man who generously shared with others his material and spiritual resources. His love for his Lord Jesus Christ was lived out in his everyday experiences. Well done Charlie.

Charlie was a good man. We always enjoyed being with him whenever we were with the Angell family on special occasions.  He loved his Lord, loved his family, loved his country and served them all well.  Phyllis, Roger and Pam - my our good Lord provide you strength and comfort at this time.
