in Wells, Texas on April 6, 1938.
In 1943 she migrated with her family to San Francisco where she attended public school. She was immersed in the Christian community from an early age and was baptized at Third Baptist Church in San Francisco.
Music was a great influence in her life and she enjoyed singing while her brother Oscar played the piano.
Joyce attended San Francisco State University where she studied music and social services, and received a B.A Degree.
She was blessed with a large and loving family. She was referred to as "Aunt Joyce" by everyone she met, and "Big Baby" by her siblings. However, you would often hear her tell you she was the "Queen". She loved traveling and was always known as the life of the party.
In her early years she modeled in New York and sang for Capitol Records in Chicago and Los Angeles. A philanthropist at heart. She enjoyed cooking and helping those in need. She later dedicated her life helping children at Valley of the Moon Children's Foundation in Santa Rosa.
Dearly missed by her loved ones she leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Joyce is survived by her sister, Dorothy J. Preston Word;
her daughters Lori A. Cherney Pannell, Kimberly P. Cherney,
and Hillory J. Robinson;
her grandchildren Shawnisha Jackson, Mikayla Pannell, Javina Robinson, Richard Pannell, and Jeñiyah Robinson.
