Tommy was born on January 13, 1948, to Harold T., “Papa Jill,” and Dorothy C., “Mama Dot,”
McKinney. Tommy was the oldest of three children.
He is survived by his sister, Dawn McKinney Evans (Mark); a sister-in-law, Penny McKinney Smith; a son, Jon Charles McKinney (Belle) and a daughter, Andrea McKinney Fleener; three grandchildren; Jon Charles McKinney, Jr., Ava McKinney, and Jacob Fleener as well as an array of nieces and nephews.
Tommy was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Leigh “Pam” McKinney, both his parents, and his younger brother, Rodger Dennis “Denny” McKinney, Sr.
Tommy, a lifelong resident of the Memphis area, retired from the Memphis Fire Department after 25 years, serving the south end as a firefighter before being promoted to the Fire Prevention Bureau as a Fire Inspector. At the time of his retirement, his rank had risen to Fire Investigator.
He went on to serve the Memphis Police Department as a Reserve Officer in the years following his retirement from the MFD, following in his father’s footsteps, who served the Memphis Police Department for 30 years.
As well, Tommy served the City of Collierville as a Building Inspector in Collierville for a number of years, utilizing the expertise he received with the Memphis Fire Department.
Tommy most recently assisted Silver Creek Retirement Community, always sharing the sweet stories of the residents there with friends and family. The residents enjoyed his entertaining humor as he supervised their “outings.” His gentle nature and caring manner will be sorely missed there.
He was an avid historian and could recite nearly any important occurrence in history from memory. He loved the time he spent as a volunteer with the town of Collierville’s Historical Society.
Tommy was a communicant of the Catholic Church of the Incarnation in Collierville.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 27, 2023, beginning at 11:00 AM at Collierville Funeral Home 3863 Bailey Station Road in Collierville. Funeral Services will begin at 12 noon with interment to follow immediately at Magnolia Cemetery, off the Collierville Square.
