Mike was born on July 6th, 1944 in Houston, Texas to G.W. Layton and Elizabeth Carroll. He was the middle child of 3.
At the age of 15, he started his first job working a paper route. A few years later, he met the love of his life, Shirley Dee Wood, at church. They quickly fell in love and were married on March 15th, 1963. Dee was only 16 at the time and turned 17 the next day. Dee was his best friend; they did everything together.
His ambitions grew and after completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of Texas in Austin, he began working at Humble Oil. Mike was a hard worker who always strove to be the best at everything he did, and his employers’ took notice. He was a leader and quickly rose to the top. After a number of life’s trials with health and other things (as we all have) he eventually decided he wanted to start his own business. Mike began All Seasons Brokerage in 1970 where he worked the remainder of his career.
Mike’s success with All Seasons blessed our family abundantly. He and Dee loved to travel, and we were fortunate to share many family memories traveling to different destinations. He also made sure that extended family members always had a place to work. He was the patriarch of our family and made sure we were all well taken care of and had everything we needed.
Both Mike and Dee grew up in Tyler, Texas. They own a family lakehouse on Lake Tyler and frequently visited as they greatly enjoyed spending time on the lake with family and friends. Mike made sure to get the entire extended family on both sides together for many family reunions.
Mike loved the Lord and was heavily involved in church and small group. There were seasons when he led Sunday school classes. He touched people. He sought to lead a life worthy of God’s calling. He was a positive person and woke every morning telling his daughters “this is going to be a great day!” In the mornings as his girls would start their days, he would have them all say: “I feel great, I feel wonderful, and I feel terrific!” Mike was always reading and constantly working to improve his relationship with God, family and his own character. He strove to better himself daily. He was loyal to a fault.
Mike loved sports, in particularly, tennis. He was competitive in everything and loved a challenging tennis match. If a Major Tennis tournament was playing, it would be playing at their home. He taught all of his girls to play and have a love for the sport.
Anyone that knew Mike, knew that he was a die-hard Republican. If you went to his and Dee’s house, there was a 99.9% chance you would hear FOX news playing at a high volume.
In 2009, Mike had quadruple by-pass surgery followed by ARDS and a heart-attack. This was a difficult time, and by God’s miraculous grace, Mike fought to re-gain his health and re-learn to walk. In 2010, he was able to walk again and began enjoying time with family and traveling more with Dee. God is so compassionate, loving and generous to allow our family these past 11.5 years with Mike. Mike used the extra time on earth to be a walking example of God’s grace. We pray that Mike’s life will continue to impact you for God’s glory and that you will see Mike in heaven one day.
Mike is survived by his wife, Dee Layton; children, Christi Carson (husband, Guy), Lisa Hyman (husband Hayden), and Lana Arnold (husband Thomas); grandchildren, Sheridan, Kolby, Layton, Leighana, Kyndle, Braden, Brieanna; great-grandchild, Gannon; brother, Don Layton. He was preceded in death by his parents G.W. and Elizabeth Layton, and sister, Cindy Gebe.
A visitation for Mike will be held on Thursday, March 17th 2022 from 4:30-6:30pm at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5272 Colleyville Blvd. Colleyville, TX 76034.
