Born March 4, 1978 in California, Ryan was the second child of Michael & Anne Mulcahy. He eschewed any food which was green, but excelled on the fields and courts of every sport he played. The family moved to Texas when he was in middle school, and Ryan was a proud member of the “I wasn’t born here, but got here as quickly as I could” club.
In between classes, Ryan spent high school honing his jump shot and attending his first concert (which may, or may not, have been Rhett Akins.) He treasured the friends he made and the adventures they continued to share as adults: college life, playing ball, Pamplona, March Madness, marriages, and more …
Ryan went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, and an advanced degree in Biomedical Engineering. At the suggestion of the family doctor he went into tissue and organ procurement, quickly impassioned by the mission. He proved tireless in his commitment to the cause. Thirteen years into his career, Ryan Mulcahy, CTP, BLS, ACLS, MS added “RN” after his name, having earned a Bachelor’s in Nursing to better serve and care for transplant clients and their families.
Ryan enjoyed working for the non-profit LifeGift as Director of Clinical Operations. Prior to that, he was employed by Paragonix Technologies and by Southwest Transplant Alliance. Many close friendships were forged at STA, where he found himself among like-minded people in the trenches: long hours, little sleep, frequent travel, always on-call, and all while saving lives …
Ryan was active in the community, most notably as the (self-appointed) grammar police. He was known for his sarcastic, quick wit and infectious laugh. He was a competitive athlete who always played to win, whether practice or real game. Or board game. Or Words with Friends. He was well-read and never stopped learning – the guy you wanted on your team at trivia night.
Ryan Thomas Mulcahy died of natural causes on November 7, 2020 in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 42, and had finally started to eat his greens. He will be remembered as a beloved son, a not-so-little brother, generous uncle, dedicated colleague, loyal friend, and closeted Hufflepuff.
He is survived by his parents; sister; two nephews; niece “Viv”; maternal grandmother; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to Donate Life Texas or registering to become an organ donor.
