Icie Gibson Berkman, aged 72, passed away on July 19, 2024, in Colleyville, TX. Born on February 27, 1952, in Kingsville, TX, Icie was the vibrant and loving eldest of a set of identical twin girls. Known for her infectious laugh and welcoming presence, she spent her early years in Bishop, TX, with her four siblings.
Icie graduated from Bishop High School and later attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville, TX. She married her high school sweetheart, John Berkman, and they soon after moved to Munich, Germany when John was drafted into the army in 1972. This instilled their lifelong love of Germany and travel, and they enjoyed 35 years of marriage until John’s passing in 2007. The couple settled in Arlington, TX in 1980, where they raised their three daughters, all of whom attended the University of Texas at Austin, instilling a later love for the Texas Longhorns!
A true Texan at heart, Icie's personality was as grand as her home state. Her laughter was not the only thing that filled a room; her love for travel, music, and the Dallas Cowboys were passions she shared enthusiastically with everyone around her. Family was the cornerstone of her life, as evident in her deep involvement and joy in her grandchildren's lives—Cole, Levi, Millie, Berk, Theodora and Charlie.
Icie is survived by her daughters, Wendie Kricker (Will), Misty LeGrande (Mick), and Bonnie Journey (Taylor); grandchildren Cole, Levi, Millie, Berk, and Charlie; siblings Eric Gibson, Lorrell Wakeland, Ocie Whitaker, and Lark Gibson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband John Berkman, granddaughter Theodora Journey, and her parents Martha Jane Hammonds and John Gibson.
A viewing will be held at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd, Colleyville, TX 76034, at 12 pm followed by a service at 1 pm. The family invites those who knew Icie to join in celebrating her remarkable life.
