Kenneth Eugene Hughes Jr., 68, of College Station passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 8, 2012. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 12 from 5:30-8:30p.m. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 13 at 10:00am at Christ United Methodist Church, 4201 State Hwy 6 South College Station, TX.
Ken was born in San Antonio, TX on August 27, 1944 to Joan (Bush) Hughes and Kenneth Eugene Hughes Sr. Ken grew up and attended school in Lytle, TX. He graduated from Lytle High School in 1962, some of his achievements include FFA Greenhand Chapter, Chapter, District and Area President; Lonestar Farmer Award; Letters in Basketball, Track and Football for which he also received all district honors and Best Actor and All Star Cast awards for One/Act Play.
After graduation Ken attended Texas A&M and Southwest Texas before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1965. His Air Force service took him to Thailand, where he served as an Air Policeman. In 1971 while visiting his brother Bob, who was attending Sam Houston State, Ken met Linda Henriksen. Shortly thereafter he took a job working for the Texas Department of Corrections. In July of 1972, Ken and Linda were married at First United Methodist Church in Houston, TX. In 1975 they celebrated the birth of their son Marc and in 1978 their daughter Amy. During his career with TDC, which spanned 20 years and culminated in his reaching the rank of Warden, Ken and his family made homes in Huntsville, Gatesville and Navasota, Texas.
Following his departure from TDC, Ken and his family moved to Brenham, Texas. During 22 years in Brenham, Ken owned and operated Franke Feed Store, served as Chief Deputy and then later Jail Administrator for the Washington County Sheriffs Department worked at KULF radio, Co-Owned Appel Ford, and owned LK Cattle Company. Ken was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brenham, where he taught Sunday school. Ken was also an active Brenham High School Band Parent as well as a Special Olympics coach. Ken was the recipient of the 2005 Brenham High School “Ed Pothul and Jerry Merten Above and Beyond Award”.
Throughout his adult life Ken was an avid slow pitch softball player, participated in BBQ Cook-offs, and was active with the county fairs and 4H clubs in the communities where his family lived. Ken served on the Fair Boards of Washington, Grimes and Walker Counties (where he is a lifetime member).
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Sr. and Joan. Survivors include his wife of 40 years Linda; his brothers, Bob and wife Carol of College Station TX and Glen and wife Kim of Brenham TX; his son, Marc Hughes and wife Stacy of Cypress TX; his daughter, Amy Hartsell and husband Jarrek of College Station TX; six grandchildren, Tatum, Keaton and Weston Hartsell and Wyatt, Celia and Annalee Hughes; several nieces and nephews as well as a large extended family.
